Annin Scrunchie Bag Sewing Pattern is in the Shop Now

The Annin Scrunchie Bag sewing pattern is now available as a stand alone pdf in the Wholecloth Patterns shop (with a sweet little discount!). Annin was featured in TAUKO Magazine Issue 17 : Happiness last fall, and it is my pleasure to make the individual pattern available now.

Annin was originally conceived with cozy winter gatherings in mind—those moments when you’re heading out the door to a dinner party, a holiday celebration, or a night of catching up with friends. Its soft gathered shape and playful silhouette felt perfectly suited to the season’s festive spirit. But as it turns out, Annin isn’t just a winter bag. When spring arrives and our routines start to feel a little lighter, this small but mighty bag transitions beautifully into warm weather.

In the spring and summer months, we tend to carry less. Bulky layers and oversized totes give way to simpler essentials: a phone, a set of keys, a pair of sunglasses, maybe a lip balm or small wallet. Annin is perfectly sized for exactly that. It’s compact enough to feel effortless, yet roomy enough to keep the essentials close at hand. Whether you’re heading out for a walk, meeting friends for brunch, or spending an afternoon at a market, Annin is the kind of bag you can grab without a second thought.

Another reason Annin works so well year-round is the opportunity to play with fabric. In winter, it looks beautiful corduroy, or deeper tones that echo the season’s mood. In spring and summer, lightweight cottons, linens, and cheerful prints give the bag an entirely new personality. One pattern, endless possibilities.

About the Bag

The soft, gathered base of the Annin creates a playful sculptural shape. Inside, a fully lined interior keeps the bag polished and durable, while the drawstring closure cinches everything together for a secure yet relaxed finish.

The strap is easily adjustable, allowing you to customize the fit depending on how you like to wear it. Carry Annin over the shoulder for a classic look, or extend the strap and wear it crossbody when you want to keep your hands free. That flexibility makes it just as practical for everyday outings as it is for special occasions.

One of the best parts of the Annin Scrunchie Bag is its simplicity. The construction is straightforward making it an approachable and satisfying project for sewists of all skill levels. Because it's intentionally designed without hardware it’s also a great opportunity to dip into your fabric stash. Use a special remnant, experiment with color combinations, or showcase a favorite print.

Because the bag is quick to sew and endlessly customizable, it also makes a thoughtful handmade gift. Sew one for a friend’s birthday, create a set for bridesmaids, or make a few to have on hand for upcoming celebrations. Beginners will appreciate the clear construction and achievable steps, while more experienced makers can enjoy adding their own creative touches, from unique fabrics to personal details that make each bag one of a kind.

Recommended fabric:
Annin works best with a medium weight woven main fabric that has a crisp drape to hold the volume of the gathers. Denim, linen, and canvas are ideal, but feel free to substitute whatever is left over from your most recent garment project. Lighter weight fabrics can be reinforced with fusible interfacing. Lightweight woven fabrics, such as cotton batiste or lawn, are best for the lining.

All of the Annin sample bags shown here were made with leftover fabrics from other (mostly garment) projects. Sources for similar fabrics are listed below:
Lilac (color out of stock)  8.5 oz Washed Canvas from Blackbird Fabrics
Green (similar) Soft Washed Linen (4.9 oz/yard) from Stylemaker Fabrics
Blue Light weight denim (5oz/yd) from Amazon.

Difficulty:
Confident beginner. Perfect for the sewist with minimal experience.
